When I saw we were reading Psalm 22 over the next two days, I was excited. Any opportunity I get to dispel the belief that Christ “lost hope” on the cross, I’m going to take it.
Right before He gave up His life, Jesus is recorded as saying, “My God My God, why have You forsaken Me.” Many Christians use this passage to show that Christ was “losing hope.” This is not so. Jesus knew that the Jewish people there would know Psalm 22, which begins with, “My God My God, why have You forsaken Me.” As you read it, you will see sections of the Psalm that point to the events that happened while Jesus was being crucified. When Jesus made that statement, He was not saying that His hope was fading. He was giving the Jews one more piece of evidence that He is the Messiah, the Holy One of Israel. He is the One for whom they were waiting. The very One they were crucifying. Here’s today’s Bible verse. Enjoy. Psalm 22:16-18 16 Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. 17 All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. 18 They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment. Today’s Reading: Psalm 22:1-18
