Not What They Thought
Reading this passage brought to mind the death of James brother of John. The two brothers asked Jesus for the places of prominence when Jesus rose to be King of Israel. They thought Jesus was going to be a king like David. It was not what they thought. When they said they could drink from the cup Jesus drank from, I’m certain they did not believe James would be executed for his faith in Jesus. They did not understand that John would be exiled for his faith in Jesus. It was not what they thought. As you grow in your faith, you must understand that a life with Christ brings its own trials and tests. At some point you’re going to have to say yes to your relationship with Jesus when it seems like saying no would be better for you. Are you willing to drink from the cup Jesus drank from? Here’s today’s Bible verse. Enjoy. Mark 10:35-40 35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” 36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked. 37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.” 38 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?” 39 “We can,” they answered. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.” Today’s Readings: Mark 10:32-52; Proverbs 10:22
