When I was much younger there was a popular show called “The Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous.” The show chronicled the lives of people whom us “regular” people envied. Thoughts of “oh to be rich or famous like them” filled most viewers minds. But as we read this passage we are reminded that if we put our hope in riches or fame, we risk eternal separation from God.
There is no Biblical proof that being rich or famous, in and of themselves, destines you for eternal separation from God. However, it can be difficult. Why? Because they can become toxic idols in our lives that pull us away from the Father. By all means, live a life that brings you joy, even if it includes riches and fame. Just be mindful of how you got there and give God all of the glory. He will allow you to have all the blessing. Here’s today’s Bible verse. Enjoy. Psalm 49:16-20 16 Do not be overawed when others grow rich, when the splendor of their houses increases; 17 for they will take nothing with them when they die, their splendor will not descend with them. 18 Though while they live they count themselves blessed—and people praise you when you prosper—19 they will join those who have gone before them, who will never again see the light of life. 20 People who have wealth but lack understanding are like the beasts that perish. Today’s Reading: Psalm 49
