Juanita Mays Biography
Juanita Mays was born in New Orleans, LA, on September 20, 1937 to Earl and Neena Dugas. Like many families during the Great Depression, their family was very poor. Her parents had a sixth grade and third grade education, respectively. Upon graduating high school, Juanita entered Dillard College, but dropped out and joined the U.S. Air Force where she met her future husband. Shortly after getting married, Juanita left the military and began raising her children; five sons. As she and her husband moved from place to place in the military life one thing remained constant; her sons knew that the life progression was elementary school, middle school, high school then college.
Ultimately, against all odds, Juanita saw all five of her sons graduate from college with a Bachelor’s Degree; three of her sons now hold multiple post graduate degrees. The 2015 Census lists the percentage of African American men who have earned a Bachelor’s Degree at twenty-two and a half percent; those with a post graduate degree is at eight percent. Six weeks before her death she attended the graduation of her youngest son, where he received his second post graduate degree.
It is this ability of this woman who inspired her sons to seek higher education, which is the primary reason for the Juanita Mays Memorial Scholarship.

The Jang-Kim Story
The definition of perseverance is steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. This word epitomizes the lives of Jang Yong Bae and Kim Jung Ran. The last ten years of their lives found them in and out of hospitals with ailments ranging from open heart surgery to colon cancer, to multiple strokes. None of these problems caused either of these two hard workers to stop moving forward in life.
The parents of five daughters, Jang-Kim lived a full life despite any setback which came their way. When Kim had her heart attack, Jang was there to support her and care for her. When Jang was diagnosed with colon cancer, Kim was there to support him and care for him. When Kim had three strokes, Jang stopped working, became a certified care giver and supported her. These two amazing people never allowed any of life’s hardships to stop them from striving for their dreams. No matter the circumstance they continuously showed love for one another and for their children and grandchildren.
It was this love for one another that seemed to be on display the morning of November 29, 2015. Jang had brought Kim home from the nursing facility in which she was now staying to take her to his mother’s home for his mom’s 92nd birthday. They never made it. While driving to their destination their car was hit by multiple cars which resulted in the fatalities of both Jang and Kim.
The oldest daughter summed up their love best when she spoke of her mother’s passing two hours after her father, “I guess he loved her so much that he wanted her to come with him.”
