The High Priest was the supreme leader of the Jews during their time in that position. The position was inherited within the Levite clan. The role of the High Priest was to intercede on behalf of the Jews. They made the sacrifices necessary to satisfy God’s pending wrath on the people.
Why is it significant that Jesus is shown in this passage as the High Priest? First, the Jews would understand the importance of the role of the High Priest “analogy.” Second, and most significant, it shows a departure from the norm of the High Priest lineage. Jesus is not from the Levite tribe. He’s from the tribe of Judah. This reality may have been a little confusing for the Jewish people who understood the lineage of the High Priest office. I encourage you to take a few moments and learn about the role of the High Priest. Then you may better understand the significance of Jesus being called our High Priest. Here’s today’s Bible verse. Enjoy. Hebrews 8:1-2 Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 2 and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being. Today’s Reading: Hebrews 8 *Note: yesterday’s reading should have been Hebrews 7:11-28. The verse was 7:23-25. Thank you for your patience.
